Unveiling Sundew Digestion: Chitinases at Work
Chitinases are enzymes that break down chitin, a substance potentially found in the exoskeletons of insects caught by carnivorous plants. These enzymes are present in the digestive fluids of these plants. In our presentation, we will explore the following questions:
*Which substances stimulate the gene expression of chitinases?
*How do digestion products affect the gene expression of chitinases?
*What are the specific characteristics of chitinases in sundews?

Sundew Trap Development: Proteomic perspective
Переглядів 326Місяць тому
Sundews evolved leaf traps to supplement their diet with minerals and organic materials from prey, facilitating growth and reproduction in nutrient-deficient habitats. Forked sundew (Drosera binata) has characteristic adhesive traps covered by glandular tentacles containing digestive enzymes. We investigated five visually distinct leaf developmental stages. We extracted proteins with detergent-...

Importance of water to prey capture in Nepenthes

At an ICPS conference many moons ago, I saw a presentation regarding the manner in which certain species of Nepenthes captured their prey, and that very moist environments that would make the peristome wet radically increase prey capture efficiency. The Venus Flytrap Genome: Why It’s So Complicated

The Venus flytrap or Dionaea muscipula is part of the droseraceae family. It has raised attention that crossing 2 cultivars of Venus flytrap almost never results in the same offspring plants than parental plants. Yes, indeed some traits are dominant. But not all of them ;) Red sure is dominant in some way, but for the others I don't know. One would have to rigorously cross 2 cultivars, and do some statistical tests on it !

    Congratulations on growing these beauties, especially as a resident! Amazing video, and amazing how you can grow all these genera in the same terrarium! I was wondering though -- what are your temperature and humidity parameters in your room throughout the year? Is it constantly around 70 degrees (F), or does the temperature vary throughout the year? And what are you doing to keep Heliamphora, Drosophyllum, Roridula, and Darlingtonia alive? Congratulations -- it's quite the accomplishment!!

  • @aureliusfeynman485
    @aureliusfeynman485 3 місяці тому

    Interesting talk, but I think 3 points should be adressed or stressed further. First, a steady disinfection program is essential to longterm success of using standing water or recirculated for irrigation. Zoomycetes can thrive in these systems and capillary mats can (and will eventually) be covered in algae without proper measures taken. So the use of a disinfectant like Zerotol or a homemade solution of hydrogen peroxide should be applied every 2 weeks ideally, on the mat and in the water reservoirs, to curb the development of these organisms. Second point, in moments of high water demand (e.g. summer heat waves), capillary action can be insufficient at maintaining the water column in the media, so you can run into a "bottle neck" in the water supply to the roots. This of course depends on many factors, like the size and type of pot used, root system development, size of aerial parts of the plant, etc. But it should be stressed that young and recently potted plants are at higher risk, as well as plants potted in taller pots or net pots. In these circumstances, it's advisable to provide top watering at least weekly and up to once a day depending on conditions, to prevent issues. Thirdly, for those who apply fertilizers of any form to the media, salts of these fertilizers will accumulate over time in the top 1/3 of the media, due to the salts migrating upwards in the water column and then accumulating due to the evaporation/consumption of water in this layer. Again, periodic top watering with "softer" water will leach these salts before they accumulate to a toxic level. Don't use pure distilled water for watering, some EC is needed as otherwise there will be osmotic stress to the roots.
